Eutectic intermetallic formation during solidification of a Mg-Sn-Al-Zn-Mn alloy

Multiple primary and eutectic intermetallic compounds (IMCs) often form during the solidification of multicomponent magnesium alloys. Here, we comprehensively explore formation in Mg-4Sn-3Al-1.5Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) as-cast alloy, comparison with Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.3Mn, to better understand Mg 2 Sn complex multiphase how it affects other IMCs. Various IMCs formed at different stages solidification: τ-AlMn Al 8 Mn 5 early Sn, β-Mg 17 12, τ-MgAlZn as late forming phases. Most phase shared a faceted interface 12 grains, fully divorced particle containing multiple EBSD-based trace analysis combination XCT TEM results revealed that grew adjacent {100} growth facets Sn. Within multi-phase particles, seven types reproducible orientation relationships (ORs) were measured between each intermetallic. The ORs found have best lattice match among observed pairs. For defined ORs, can be correlated icosahedral coordination τ-MgAlZn. • Multi-phase particles investigated Mg-4Sn-3Al-1Zn-0.6Mn alloy. Reproducible intermetallics.
